Turfing and lawn laying in Larkfield. New turf gives you a finished lawn in a day rather than a season of waiting on seed. The preparation underneath is what decides whether it lasts. Free quotes.
Turf laid on lumpy or compacted ground stays lumpy and struggles to root. We strip off what is there, break up the compacted layer, level it and firm it before any turf arrives. This stage takes the longest and it is what you are really paying for.
More Information
Turf is laid in a staggered pattern like brickwork, with the rolls pushed tight together. Gaps dry out at the edges and turn brown, and those lines stay visible for months. Butted up properly, the joints knit together and vanish within a few weeks.
New turf needs watering daily for the first fortnight, more in warm weather, and it should be kept off as much as possible. When you can lift a corner and feel it hold, it has rooted. The first cut after that should just take the tips off.
Turfing is a good example of a job where the visible part is the smallest part. Anyone can unroll turf. Getting the levels right, the base firm and the edges cut cleanly is what separates a lawn that lasts from one that patches up within a year. Seventeen years of Larkfield gardens has drilled that in.

Autumn and spring are ideal, as the ground is warm and damp and rain does much of the watering. Summer turfing works but needs far more water from you. Turf can be laid through winter too, as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
Keep off it for two to three weeks while it roots. Light foot traffic is usually fine after that, though heavy use is better left another few weeks. If you need to cross it early, lay boards down to spread the weight rather than walking on the turf.
It is not worth it. Turf laid on old grass sits on a layer that rots underneath, so it roots badly and the levels are wrong from day one. We strip the old lawn off, prepare the ground properly and take the old turf away with us.
